World's oldest running car for sale

World's oldest running car for sale
World's oldest running car for sale, The world's oldest working car is set to go under the hammer - and it is expected to fetch up to £1 million. The four-wheeled car, called La Marquise, was built in 1884 for the Count De Dion, one of the founders of the automobile manufacturers De Dion-Bouton et Trepardoux. It has only had two other owners since, according to Gooding & Company, the auction house selling it.

The four-seater, fuelled by coal, wood and paper, takes about half an hour to work up enough steam to go. In an 1887 race, La Marquise hit an average speed of 26 miles per hour on a 19-mile course. The following year it won the world's first motor race, beating out its three-wheeled competition, another De Dion-Bouton.

The steam-powered La Marquise was built in France in 1884 by De Dion-Bouton et Trepardoux, one year before Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz each independently built their first gasoline-powered cars in German. Twelve years later, Henry Ford built his first automobile in the US.

La Marquise is being sold by Gooding & Company, the California-based auction house, in August in Pebble Beach.

Newborn dinosaur found

Newborn dinosaur found, An illustration of the baby dinosaur recently found in Maryland. Click to enlarge this image. LadyofHats.

A hatchling dinosaur representing a new species, Propanoplosaurus marylandicus, was found in Maryland.

The dinosaur is the youngest nodosaur ever found the first hatchling ever recovered in the Eastern United States.

Maryland had a warm, tropical environment during the Early Cretaceous and was home to many dinosaurs.

A five-inch-long baby dinosaur with a short nose, armor and spikes went belly-up and likely drowned in what is now the Washington, D.C. beltway, say scientists, who describe the find as a new species as well as the first hatchling of any dinosaur species ever recovered in the eastern United States.

The tiny dinosaur, Propanoplosaurus marylandicus, is the youngest nodosaur ever found. This group of short-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs reached about 30 feet long when fully grown and had powerful jaws and small teeth.

"Dinosaurs grew up faster than we ever imagined," said Ray Stanford, a Maryland-based dinosaur tracker who was the lead author of a study on the find in the Journal of Paleontology. "We can tell that this little guy was just a hatchling because the bones were elastic and cartilaginous upon death and not ossified."

Stanford found the new 110-million-year-old nodosaur while searching a creek bed in Maryland's Prince George's County after an extensive flood. The area, according to Stanford, was quite a hotbed of dinosaur activity during the Early Cretaceous.

Major predators, such as huge meat-eating Acrocanthosaurus, lived in the region, along with numerous large sauropods, and other plant-eaters like Hypsilophodon and Iguanodon.

"The climate was quite warm and tropical," he said, adding that it was full of lush palm-like trees, such as Cycadophytes members.

The living wasn't always easy for dinosaurs, however, as the little nodosaur proves. Stanford and his team believe the baby dinosaur, which grew to only five inches long, drowned before getting buried by sediment in the stream. They base this on the location and the fact that the dinosaur was preserved on its back. Stanford said dinosaurs that drown exhibit "float and bloat" characteristics shared by this specimen.

Weishampel, a paleontologist and a professor of anatomy at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, led a computer analysis of the baby dinosaur's skull, comparing its bumps, grooves and proportions to 10 other species of ankylosaurs, the group that contains nodosaurs.

They determined the dinosaur was closely related to other nodosaurs, but had distinctive features, such as a particularly short snout, which earned its designation as a new species.

Seller offers free booze to buyer of townhome

Seller offers free booze to buyer of townhome, Seller, Glenview homeowner, offers free booze to buyer of townhome as a way to set apart her 3-bedroom townhouse in a down real estate market. You can drink for free at the local watering hole and make it home in seconds. Cool huh? Melanie Gravdal has been struggling to sell the unit, so she’s decided to offer a unique incentive to stoke interest: $1,000 worth of food and drink at Grandpa’s Place, the bar across the street, to whomever buys the house.
“We weren’t getting very much traffic because there was so much competition in the market. We live in a place where restaurants and bars come within walking distance so we thought this was a way to cross-promote the neighborhood and our homes.”

Gravdal and her husband, who live in the house with their 2-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, are looking to move back to California. The family first put their house on the market in June, but with a bevy of similar townhomes in the area, interest was hard to come by. Yet prospects have picked up since she suggested the bar promotion to her realtor, Missy Jerfita, around Labor Day.

“Before the promotion we had two showings in seven weeks,” Gravdal said. “Since the promotion, … we’ve had nine. It used to be that sellers would make cookies for buyers to show them that they were good. Now theonus is on the seller to sweeten the deal.”

After dropping the price $25,000, the house is currently listed at $450,000, just slightly below the average for a 3-bedroom townhouse. At Grandpa’s, fliers for the promotion are posted all over the bar area.

“It’s become kind of a talking point,” said Mike Maginot, the general manager at Grandpa’s. “As far as whether it’s going to work I don’t know. The rallying point seems to be actually how to spend the $1,000s. The best idea I’ve heard is a family of four coming in once or twice a month, enjoying a meal and going on their way.”

World's Largest Sperm Bank Says They Don't Want Your Ginger SpermCryos, a Danish network of international sperm banks and the largest one of its kind, has officially stopped taking sperm from redheaded guys. Despite an overall increase in donations, the demand for ginger sperm just isn't that high. Sorry, Matt.

Essentially, no one loves redheads sterile couples by and large don't want to make redhead babies. Cryos director Ole Schou even went on record to state that, unless a woman's partner was a ginger or she had a preference for red hair, he didn't see many people choosing red hair over other hair types. In fact, the only country where the specimens were running off the shelves was Ireland.

R. Kelly Burt Reynolds Foreclosure

R. Kelly Burt Reynolds Foreclosure

R. Kelly Burt Reynolds Foreclosure. Would you believe it that the richest apartment building faces foreclosure? A New York couple is facing foreclosure in one of the world’s richest apartment buildings. The couple reportedly stopped making payments on $16 million in loans tied to their apartment at 740 Park Avenue. In addition to that, famous celebrities is also facing foreclosure like R. Kelly and Burt Reynolds.
Yes, Burt Reynolds is also facing foreclosure.Correct me if I’m wrong, but celebrities usually make more money than the average human, right? I mean,
chances are that if your name appears in the papers or on several entertainment sites, then your paycheck is bound to have a few extra zeroes on the end of it…yes? I just wanted to double check that I wasn’t crazy with this logic, but it seems like more and more celebrities are facing foreclosure with their houses. First R. Kelly with his mansion and now Burt Reynolds with his $1.2 million mortgage debt. I know the bad economy has certainly put a big dent in employment opportunities (and therefore our bank accounts), but I had no idea our Hollywood stars were feeling the effects so badly as well.

10 hangover remedies

10 hangover remedies
10 hangover remedies. Prevention is the best cure for a hangover. The only way to avoid a pounding head and queasiness the morning after is to drink in moderation, or to stay away from alcohol entirely. But with all sorts of seasonal celebrations going on, it's easy to overindulge.

Alternating your drinks with water or another nonalcoholic beverage can help you slow down and stay hydrated. If you still wind up with a hangover, you may be inclined to try one of the many supposedly tried-and-true remedies that have been passed down through the ages.

Don't get your hopes up. Traditional hangover remedies are often ineffective, and some of them may actually make you feel worse.

Hair of the dog
Even though the thought of a Bloody Mary may appeal to you, a Virgin Mary is a much better choice the morning after.

"The worst thing to do is to have another drink," says Charles Cutler, M.D., an internist in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and the chair of the American College of Physician's board of governors.

The alcohol may temporarily take the edge off your symptoms but could hurt in the long run. Hangovers make you feel horrible because alcohol is toxic, Cutler explains, and you need to give your body a chance to recover. That morning drink could lead to an even worse hangover the following day.

Greasy breakfast
There's no scientific evidence that a heaping helping of bacon and eggs will ease hangover anguish, although many people swear by it. "Greasy food is just going to give you heartburn," says Cutler, who recommends sticking with easy-to-digest foods such as toast or cereal. "You want to get calories right back into your system."

Eat light and stay hydrated, agrees John Brick, Ph.D., an alcohol research scientist and author of "The Doctor's Hangover Handbook."

"No specific foods are recommended, although honey sandwiches are helpful to some people," Brick says. "[They're] easy to eat and digest."

Alka-Seltzer
Alka-Seltzer turns 80 in 2011, and the famous fizzy medicine has probably been used to treat hangovers for nearly that long. In 2001, the company even introduced a Morning Relief formulation specifically for hangovers.

All Alka-Seltzer varieties contain sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda), which will help settle a queasy belly by neutralizing stomach acid. But other ingredients, notably aspirin and citric acid, may irritate your stomach after a night of heavy drinking.

Aspirin or ibuprofen
Over-the-counter painkillers can certainly help ease hangover headaches and the aches and pains you may feel elsewhere in your body after a night of heavy drinking.

But choose carefully. If you're a regular heavy drinker, you may have done some damage to the lining of your stomach, and taking aspirin or ibuprofen (such as Advil) can worsen this damage and even cause bleeding, Dr. Cutler warns.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is also risky for habitual drinkers, due to the potential for liver damage. Check with your doctor about a painkiller that's right for you.

Hangover pills
There are lots of products out there that claim to prevent or cure hangovers -- such as Chaser, PreToxx, and RU 21 -- but there is very little scientific evidence that they will make you feel any better.

"Hangover pills that have been studied are not effective, or only help against a few complaints...but not all," says Joris C. Verster, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychopharmacology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, who studies hangovers.

A 2005 review article in the journal "BMJ" identified eight peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled studies of hangover remedies, and concluded that "no compelling evidence exists" to support their use.

"What's in them either doesn't work, or if it has any benefit, you could buy it generically for probably a third of the price," says Cutler.

He suggests taking a multivitamin instead to restore the nutrients your body may have lost during a binge.

Coffee
If you're a regular coffee drinker, skipping the java when you're hung over may -- or may not be -- a good idea, Brick says. You may wind up layering a pounding caffeine-withdrawal headache on top of your hangover woes if you miss your morning fix.

That said, caffeine narrows your blood vessels and boosts blood pressure. "Both of these may make the hangover worse," Brick says. "If you drink coffee regularly, you might try a very small amount in the morning. Wait 30 to 60 minutes and see how you feel."

Water and sports drinks
Conventional wisdom holds that the dehydration caused by heavy drinking is what makes you feel so bad the next day.

In fact, experts actually know very little about what causes a hangover. Potential culprits include disrupted biological rhythms or even alcohol withdrawal, and research suggests that congeners -- toxic substances found in alcohol, especially dark liquors such as whiskey -- may also play a role.

Nevertheless, replacing the fluid you've lost will likely help you feel a little less miserable.

"Juice, water, Gatorade, all those things -- they're going to make you feel better," says Cutler.

Exercise
A gentle workout might help you feel better, if you can manage it. (That's a big if.)

"Remember: If you've been drinking heavily, you could be a little dehydrated, you could be metabolically behind on your nutrition, and exercise is going to require hydration and nutrition," Cutler says. "Exercise is always the right thing to do, but I don't think [on] the morning you wake up with a hangover, exercise is what you need."

What you really need is rest, he adds.

Sauna
Think you can "sweat out" the alcohol and other toxins you may have consumed during a night of partying? Think again.

A sauna can cause potentially dangerous blood vessel and blood flow changes in your body. "The last thing you need is to disrupt the normal blood flow patterns by extreme heat," Cutler says.

If you're already somewhat dehydrated, excessive sweating can be harmful, and even deadly. Researchers from the Finnish State Alcohol Company's Research Laboratories in Helsinki warn that sauna bathing while hung over carries "real health risks," including dangerous drops in blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.

Sleep
People sleep poorly after a night of drinking. Alcohol will put you to sleep quickly, but when it begins to wear off several hours later, the withdrawal your body feels can disrupt sleep and jolt you awake. While sleep deprivation won't by itself cause a hangover, it can definitely make the symptoms worse.

If you have the luxury of "sleeping it off" the next day, do so. Your foggy brain and achy body will thank you. "The body's got an amazing capacity to heal on its own," says Cutler. In the end, the only surefire treatment for a hangover is time.

Most Terrifying Roads

Most Terrifying Roads
Most terrifying roads. A road is an identifiable thoroughfare, route, way or path between two places  which may or may not be available for use by the public; public roads, especially major roads connecting significant destinations are termed highways.

Modern roads are normally smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel although historically many roads were simply recognizable routes without any formal construction or maintenance.

For purposes of international comparison, the OECD defines a road as “a line of communication using a stabilized base other than rails or air strips open to public traffic, primarily for the use of road motor vehicles running on their own wheels” which should include “bridges, tunnels, supporting structures, junctions, crossings, interchanges and toll roads but not cycle paths”. In urban areas roads may diverge through a city or village and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space easement and route. Economics and society depend heavily on efficient roads.

The United States has the largest network of roadways of any country with 6,430,366 kilometres. The People’s Republic of China is second with 3,583,715 kilometres of roadway  See List of countries by road network size. The Republic of India has the third largest road system in the world with 3,383,344 kilometres. When looking only at expressways the National Trunk Highway System in People’s Republic of China has a total length of 45,000 kilometres at the end of 2006, and 60,300 km at the end of 2008, second only to the United States with 90,000 kilometres in 2005.
