More than two days later, it was unclear who the two brutally slain victims left dangling from a bridge were, or whether they had any connection to social media.
Local police in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, didn’t answer the phone. State prosecutors said federal authorities were handling the matter. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office said it had not received any details about the killings from local officials.
But no matter what investigators uncover, analysts say the case shows the prominent role technology has come to play in describing and denouncing violence in Mexico.
“It’s still very telling,” said Andres Monroy-Hernandez, a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. “Regardless of why they killed these people, the cartels kind of went out of their way and wrote a message explicitly calling out what is being reported on the Internet.”
‘The truth has to be told’
A woman was hogtied and disemboweled. Attackers left her topless, dangling by her feet and hands from a bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo earlier this week. A bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder severed so deeply the bone was visible.
Signs left near the bodies declared the pair, both apparently in their 20s, were killed for posting denouncements of drug cartel activities on a social network.
“This is going to happen to all of those posting funny things on the Internet,” one sign said. “You better (expletive) pay attention.”
The Nuevo Laredo case “shows that online messages are worrying a lot of people,” said Raul Trejo Delarbre, who studies social media at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. “It shows that uncomfortable topics are being addressed there.”
Online posts have become some of the loudest voices reporting violence in Mexico. In some parts of the country, threats from cartels have silenced traditional media. Sometimes even local authorities fear speaking out.
Over the past year, Twitter users in the northern industrial city of Monterrey posted balacera — the Spanish word for shootout — more frequently than anyone elsewhere in the world, Monroy-Hernandez said.
“There are frequently comments about fear, the feeling of distress,” Trejo said.
But there’s a flip side. Last month, false rumors about school attacks in Veracruz, Mexico, spread rapidly on Twitter and Facebook, causing real-life chaos on the coastal city’s streets. Parents panicked, rushing to rescue their children from schools they feared were under attack. Traffic jammed and cars crashed.
Rumors swirled online this week, as word spread about the slayings in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Some users posted fears in online forums, vowing to delete their accounts or post anonymously. Others claimed the crime scene had been altered to add the social media threat.
“When I first saw the photo of the scene, I was scared. But I’ve calmed down. And now I’ve made some changes, but this is not going to compromise what I’m doing, or what others like me are doing,” said one Twitter user in northern Mexico who frequently posts about drug violence.
The Twitter user spoke to CNN but asked to remain anonymous to protect his family. He said he has removed any personal information about himself from his online profile, stopped showing his face in his profile picture and made sure not to tweet anything about his family or his job.
“People will still continue to tweet, despite these threats. People will still continue because the truth has to be told,” he said.
An anonymous voice chronicles the violence
The signs left beside bodies this week threatened those who report violent incidents through social media networks. But the two websites it mentioned, Al Rojo Vivo and Blog del Narco, also showed no signs of stopping their efforts.
On the Al Rojo Vivo forum, where citizens can make anonymous tips, one person posted: “Don’t be afraid to denounce. It’s very difficult for them to find out who denounced. They only want to scare society.”
More than 600 user comments appeared below pictures of blood-spattered shooting victims on Blog del Narco Thursday.
Since its launch last year, the drug-violence blog has gained notoriety for posting shocking videos and pictures, many of them submitted to the site anonymously.
The identity of the person behind the site also remains unknown. Last year the site’s creator said he was a twenty-something college student from northern Mexico majoring in computer science.
“The media and the government would like to make it look as if nothing is happening,” he said last year. “The media (keep silent) because they’re threatened, and the government apparently has been bought.”
In a statement sent to CNN Wednesday, Blog del Narco said its site was not dedicated to denouncing crime.
“In addition, we are not in favor or against any criminal group, we only inform as things happen,” the statement said.
‘We don’t want to find out who’s responsible’
At another blog, known as Menos Dias Aqui, Spanish for “Fewer Days Here,” “counters” spend their days combing media reports, searching for detailed descriptions of killings.
Their goal is finding the names of the deceased in every violent death in Mexico, and posting them online for the world to see.
“We want to give them names, faces. To stop trivializing death,” the website says.
That’s a difficult task amid a nationwide drug war that has claimed tens of thousands of casualties since Mexican President Felipe Calderon began a crackdown on cartels in December 2006. As of Wednesday, the website said it had documented 15,372 deaths caused by violence in Mexico since last September.
Alicia Gonzalez, a translator who runs the website, said Thursday that this week’s killings in Nuevo Laredo did not diminish her resolve.
“I have nothing to do with the causes of violent acts. Really I have no desire to get involved in those things. I am always very clear. We don’t want to find out who’s responsible,” she said. “What worries us is what will happen with all these children who are left as orphans.”

Flynt has a history of offering cash for salacious stories. In 1998 he offered money for information on President Clinton and he has offered rewards for sexual information on any member of Congress.

Fifty-six churches have agreed to take part in Operation ROC: Restore Our Community.
"What we wanted to do is target that group of people who most likely would have a chance to be more productive in our community," Rowland said.
Judges who currently sentence offenders to jail time or community service would have another option to offer qualifying first time, non-violent offenders. Instead of going to jail for a year, that offender could choose to avoid a cell entirely and go to Sunday church services for a year.
"We're hoping that," Rowland explained, "through this program for the next year, we will take a substancial number who are sentenced and turn them around and let them become productive people in the community."
It's a partnership where pastors would monitor attendance and offenders would have to check in . If it works, the the department and local clergy believe the idea could save money and restore lives.
"We want to teach them that they're valuable," Hooks said, "that God has a plan, God has a purpose. That they can be successful, that they possibly can become the person that God wants them to become."

Man arrested for DUI twice in one night
Police say Albert Metz Jr. posted bail on the first arrest Sunday night and was picked up again about three hours later after he drove away from the county jail in Casper.
According to court papers, Metz told the second arresting officer that he had been in jail and had not been drinking in there.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports Metz pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the misdemeanors.
Two years ago, the state Legislature rejected a proposed measure that would keep drunken driving and public intoxication suspects in jail until they sobered up.

On Tuesday, a judge ruled Parker, now 46, must stand trial on charges she helped Randolph Dial break out of the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite in 1994. During the hearing, Parker's soft-spoken husband, Randy Parker, chatted with his wife and occasionally leaned on the back of her chair. He has said only that the couple's marriage is strong and that they are looking forward to putting the case behind them.
Dial began spending time with Bobbi Parker while she oversaw a pottery program at the prison. With a charming personality and a gift for gab, Dial was granted minimum-security status and allowed to roam the prison grounds with little oversight.
The inmate and the assistant warden's wife worked together in the pottery shop in her garage on the prison grounds. They were also seen sipping coffee on her porch swing.
Their behavior didn't look right, Jack Cowley, the former warden of the prison, testified at the hearing. He said he was considering moving the pottery shop into another building when the pair disappeared.
"You don't sit on the front porch and drink coffee," Cowley said. "Just the appearance would be an impropriety."
Dial, who died in 2007 at age 62, pleaded guilty to escape and maintained until his death that he kidnapped Parker at knifepoint and forced her to drive him from the prison. warden wife convicted, warden wife convicted, randolph franklin dial,
"I was a hostage-taker and will probably live to regret it," Dial said in a jailhouse interview shortly after his capture. "But now I don't. Doing a life sentence, at my age, I wouldn't trade it for the past 10 1/2 years."
But prosecutors painted a different picture, claiming Bobbi Parker fell in love with the con man and ran off with him. They said a search of the pair's East Texas trailer, which had only one bed, uncovered photographs, cards they exchanged, a box of condoms, Viagra instructions, a vibrating sex toy and a love letter she wrote to him.
Prosecutors also said it wasn't the first time Parker had inappropriate relationships, including sexual contact, with inmates at prisons where her husband worked.
Parker told investigators she and Dial never were intimate, that she wasn't attracted to Dial and that the sex toy was a gag gift from a friend. She said she stayed with him out of fear he would harm her family.
An author who wrote a book on the escape, Charles Sasser, testified Tuesday that he spoke to the couple while they were on the run and said their relationship was like that of "two old married people." Sasser said he asked Dial over the telephone whether Bobbi Parker was still alive.
"He said, `Of course she's still alive. She's right here. Do you want to talk to her?"' Sasser recalled.
Bobbi Parker then took the phone and talked briefly to Sasser, who said he encouraged her to call her children, who were 7 and 10 when she disappeared, to let them know she was safe. Sasser said Parker responded that it might be better if her children thought she was dead.
Parker's attorney said she stayed with Dial out of fear.
"From the get-go, Dial was intimidating to her," said attorney Rick Cunningham. "He threatened her and her family, her two daughters ... and that became an oppressive part of that situation. She kind of resigned herself to her fate."
Parker told investigators that she began to feel woozy on the day of the escape, possibly from being drugged, and that she recalls Dial carrying her to the van that the couple escaped in.
The judge who presided over the preliminary hearing didn't buy it. In ordering her to trial on a charge that could bring 10 years in prison, Judge Brad Leverett said: "It's clear from the evidence the court has heard so far that Ms. Parker was not kidnapped in 1994 as she claimed."

Cantaloupe listeria outbreak spreading
The agency said it was the first Listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe in the United States. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said it had not recalled the melons while it worked to locate the source.
Rocky Ford cantaloupes, named for a region along the old Santa Fe Trail about 130 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of Denver, are prized for their above-average sugar content. W.C. Fields reportedly said bald guys have "a head shaped like a Rocky Ford cantaloupe," and Lucile Ball had the melons delivered to her dressing room.
"This is really silly. You can get Listeria any place. I eat those melons every day," said Kent Lusk, a fifth-generation cantaloupe farmer from Rocky Ford.
Colorado Agriculture Commissioner John Salazar said the contamination might not be the cantaloupes, but a truck or other source. But several Colorado grocery chains pulled their supplies as a precaution, and New Mexico issued a voluntary recall. State Environmental Health Bureau inspectors were collecting cantaloupe samples from grocery stores and distributors across New Mexico for laboratory analysis.
Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.
Colorado health director Chris Urbina said people who are at high risk included people 60 and older, those with weakened immune systems from transplants and people with chronic diseases. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion and convulsions. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The CDC warning advised people with cantaloupes at home to see if they came from the Rocky Ford region, and if so, not to eat the melons if they're in a vulnerable group. Health authorities asked people throwing out Rocky Ford cantaloupes to put them in a sealed plastic bag before putting them in the trash.
The fatal cases in New Mexico included a 93-year-old man from Bernalillo County, a 61-year-old woman from Curry County and a 63-year-old man from Bernalillo County. Mark Salley, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said the person who died in Colorado was not being identified.

Men caught with hundreds of baby alligators
The two men are charged with felony possession and capture of hatchling alligators along with misdemeanor conspiracy, according to MSNBC News. In addition, Duval was charged with possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon.
There is said to be a woman who assisted the men at the boat ramp where they were later caught, but police are still further investigating the part she took in the crime.
According to the Miami Herald, the men were shining a light on the water for six hours in search of alligator hatchlings. When Duval turned over the baby alligators, the wildlife officers released them back into the water.
MSNBC News reports the possession and illegal capturing of hatchling alligators can lead to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Duval, because he was concealing a weapon and ammunition as a convicted felon, may get an addition penalty of 15 years in prison and an added fine of $10,000.
Newborn dinosaur found
A hatchling dinosaur representing a new species, Propanoplosaurus marylandicus, was found in Maryland.
The dinosaur is the youngest nodosaur ever found the first hatchling ever recovered in the Eastern United States.
Maryland had a warm, tropical environment during the Early Cretaceous and was home to many dinosaurs.
A five-inch-long baby dinosaur with a short nose, armor and spikes went belly-up and likely drowned in what is now the Washington, D.C. beltway, say scientists, who describe the find as a new species as well as the first hatchling of any dinosaur species ever recovered in the eastern United States.
The tiny dinosaur, Propanoplosaurus marylandicus, is the youngest nodosaur ever found. This group of short-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs reached about 30 feet long when fully grown and had powerful jaws and small teeth.
"Dinosaurs grew up faster than we ever imagined," said Ray Stanford, a Maryland-based dinosaur tracker who was the lead author of a study on the find in the Journal of Paleontology. "We can tell that this little guy was just a hatchling because the bones were elastic and cartilaginous upon death and not ossified."
Stanford found the new 110-million-year-old nodosaur while searching a creek bed in Maryland's Prince George's County after an extensive flood. The area, according to Stanford, was quite a hotbed of dinosaur activity during the Early Cretaceous.
Major predators, such as huge meat-eating Acrocanthosaurus, lived in the region, along with numerous large sauropods, and other plant-eaters like Hypsilophodon and Iguanodon.
"The climate was quite warm and tropical," he said, adding that it was full of lush palm-like trees, such as Cycadophytes members.
The living wasn't always easy for dinosaurs, however, as the little nodosaur proves. Stanford and his team believe the baby dinosaur, which grew to only five inches long, drowned before getting buried by sediment in the stream. They base this on the location and the fact that the dinosaur was preserved on its back. Stanford said dinosaurs that drown exhibit "float and bloat" characteristics shared by this specimen.
Weishampel, a paleontologist and a professor of anatomy at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, led a computer analysis of the baby dinosaur's skull, comparing its bumps, grooves and proportions to 10 other species of ankylosaurs, the group that contains nodosaurs.
They determined the dinosaur was closely related to other nodosaurs, but had distinctive features, such as a particularly short snout, which earned its designation as a new species.

New Heinz ketchup packets
The company’s ‘Dip & Squeeze’ design is also true to its name, giving ketchup lovers the option of dunking their french fries instead of trying to squeeze it out, which can be a messy way to eat — especially while on-the-go.
The new packets, which were first announced in 2010, started showing up in Chick-fil-A and International Dairy Queen restaurants earlier this year. The ketchup company is now “close to signing a deal” with Wendy’s restaurants where the packets are expected to become available in December, said Heinz spokeswoman Jessica Jackson. McDonald’s and Burger King are testing the packets right now, she added.
Customers can now search for locations offering the packets on Heinz’s website.
The Dip & Squeeze marks the first Heinz Ketchup packet redesign in 42 years, spurred by consumer feedback about the inconvenience of Heinz’s traditional rectangular squeeze pouches.
“We conducted extensive testing to determine that the average consumer uses about three of the traditional Ketchup packets, which led us to determine the size of the new Dip & Squeeze package,” Jackson wrote in an email to ABCNews.com. “We are continuing to work with our customers to test the new package, and have been pleased with consumer excitement that is has created.”
The company started developing the Dip & Squeeze in 2008, Jackson said.
In 2010, the owner of an online food delivery business in Michigan sued Heinz, claiming the company had stolen his idea for the ”Dip & Squeeze.”
“It would be inappropriate for us to comment on ongoing legal matters, and we continue to believe that this case has no merit,” Jackson wrote in an email to ABCNews.com.
Heinz Ketchup is the nation’s third best-selling condiment, trumped by Hellmann’s mayonnaise and Tostito’s salsa, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

British school bans makeup & mirrors
According to the Today show, some students had been ignoring the school's old "discreet makeup only" rule, often wearing heavy makeup and spending far too much time socializing around bathroom mirrors. So the school has instituted a no-makeup policy for 13 to 16-year-old students and teachers have been doing daily checks to ensure that they're obeying. The mirrors in the bathroom have also been temporarily taken down, so that girls won't be tempted to congregate around them, obsessing over their appearances.
“The makeup ban is about getting girls to focus on what's important in school, which is learning and not being distracted with makeup and wanting to check it all the time,” headmaster John McNally told Today. Which is, of course, a good thing. However, if the school officials really think that nixing mirrors will stop girls from socializing or that banning makeup will keep them from obsessing over their appearance, we have to question their knowledge of teenage girls in the first place.
